WoW Hunters and their pets

Hunters are a unique dps class and they rely on pets in all aspects of the game since pets are their trademark. So when you choose a pet, choose him wisely!. We can sort them into three groups, based on their abilities: Cunning, Ferocity and Tenacity. Click here for more on WoW Hunter Pets

Cunning pets

Cunning pets are perfect for PvP encounters as their talents will provide utility, mobility and flexibility. This group mainly consists of spiders, bats, birds of prey, sillithids, chimeras, ravagers etc. Each of them poses a very different abilities i.e. spiders can immobilize targets, bats can stun etc. Mostly for PvP hunters use spiders due to the immobilize effect. Cunning tree talents offer you more stamina, speed, survivability to your pet and different unique abilities that can save you in PvP, i.e. roar of sacrifice will take off 30% of incoming damage from you and transfer it to your pet.

  • Web – Puts the target in very sticky webs while preventing the movement for 4 sec.
  • Sonic screech – is the bats ability that can stun a player for up to 2 seconds

Ferocity

Ferocity pets emphasize damage output of you and the pet itself above utility or survivability. They are mostly used in PvE aspect of the game like raids and dungeons, but sometimes are also used in PvP to give a nice niche to your group set up. Pets that have ferocity talent trees are: wolves, core hounds, moths, cats, raptors and others.  Usually their special abilities will do additional damage, but some will increase your and your pet’s damage. Some hunters tend to use Core Hounds for PvP as their debuff from lava breath will decrease the casting speed of the victim for 25%. Well timed lava breath on enemy healer combined with burst damage on a target can sometimes win matches. Wolf’s Furious Howl on the other hand is considered to be the most useful special ability for max dps in raids. Talents of Ferocity tree will either increase your pets survivability or boost your dps.

Tenacity

Tenacity talent tree focuses on survivability of your pet more than on damage or utility and is considered to be best for tanking. Their special abilities will give them higher survivability and force enemy to attack them rather than you. Some of these pets are viable in arena but very few, while for raiding most of them isn’t useful in raids. Mainly crab is viable for pvp as it can pin the target in pace for four seconds while other pets are mostly just for tanking and leveling.

What is the best choice for me?

The best choice for pet isn’t probably simple to answer, it depends on your plans PvP or PvE, and your spec of course.

Best pets for PvP

Most hunters in arena use spiders or crabs due to their immobilization abilities. Scorpids were once very popular but haven’t been seen lately in either PvE or PvP content.

Best PvE pets

Best choice for running dungeons and raids is wolf as their special ability will boost your dps, however some hunters tend to use cats which is not the best option. Beast mastery is focused on your pet damage and thus spirit beasts would probably be the best choice as they are BM hunter only pets with highest damage. For leveling purposes a good suggestion would be a bear or boar as they are the best tanks and even the turtle can prove to be excellent. Click here for more on WoW Guides
